Luke 22:1-6 The One Word That Takes Down the Enemy

Luke 22:1-6

Judas.

I’ve always had so many questions. He was one of the inner circle. He heard and saw all the things. Could there ever have been a more intimate betrayal?

I read verse three – Satan entered him – and think, “Was it even Judas’ fault?”

But then I read verse six – Judas consented – and know, “Yes, he is at fault.”

Just like Eve consented.

Just like Cain consented.

Just like David consented.

Just like we consent on a regular basis.

Satan comes calling and we consent.

But we can make different choices.

Martin Luther wrote a hymn called, “A Mighty Fortress is our God.” It contains this verse.

The Prince of Darkness grim,
We tremble not for him;
His rage we can endure,
For lo! His doom is sure.
One little word shall fell him.

One little word shall fell him – the prince of darkness.

I won’t lie; I thought the word was “Jesus.” But – in a later work – Luther actually said that the word that brings down the enemy is a confirmation of who he is – liar.

When the enemy whispers in our ears…

No one will know.

You deserve better.

You’re not enough.

You’re too much.

You’ll never change.

They’ll never change.

You’re unlovable.

You’re unforgivable.

You don’t belong.

Shame on you.

Our response must always be, “Liar!”

We must know truth. We must breathe in gospel. So we can call out deception when we hear it.

Speak truth to yourself today.

Happy Monday.
