I am totally over Candy Crush. I’ve been stuck on the same level forever. My daughter asked why I didn’t play it anymore and I told her the truth. I’m stuck and it isn’t fun anymore. So, I quit.
Fast forward to that afternoon.
That same daughter got a latch hook kit for Christmas and has been working diligently to make a pillow. She brought me her work because something just didn’t look right. So, we began counting stitches and, sure enough, at some point in her work she had accidentally turned her pattern. She had begun counting stitches in the wrong direction. This had completely messed up the picture and much of her hard work was going to have to be redone.
She was devastated. I told her that she should take a break, but then go back and try it again. I explained to her that she didn’t want to be someone who just quit when things were difficult.
At supper, I asked her if she had started to undo her work to which she replied, “No. I guess we both quit something, today.”
To which I said, “Go clean your room.”
I’ve been reading in Isaiah and I came across a really cool verse.
Woe to those who go down to Egypt for help,
who rely on horses,
who trust in the multitude of their chariots
and in the great strength of their horsemen,
but do not look to the Holy One of Israel,
or seek help from the Lord. – Isaiah 31:1
When times get hard, where do we turn for help? Old familiar pits? Possessions? Our own strength? All of those things fail. What a sad thing that we fail to seek help from the only one who can truly help us. Egypt represents everything that has failed us in the past. Yet, those are the things that we tend to turn to when life gets difficult.
Quitting isn’t always a bad thing, y’all. Sometimes, you have to walk away from Candy Crush because life is short and ain’t nobody got time for that. Other times, you have to quit returning to Egypt. Quit looking back with longing on something that was never good for you anyway.
Learn when to shake the dust off your boots and move on to better ground.
I still think I’m right about the latch hook thing, though. I’m not letter her quit that.
Stay warm, my friends!
