Exodus 38

I’m often asked how to study the Bible. A professor once said that “to study” is simply to ask questions and seek the answers. So, that’s what I do.

In this passage, for instance, I read verse 2.

“He made horns for it on its four corners.”

This is referring to the horns on the four corners of the altar. So, I asked myself, “What was the purpose of the horns?”

I was reminded of a story in 1 Kings when Adonijah is running for his life. He runs to the altar and clings to the horns.

That image has stayed with me and I’ve been pondering it for a couple of hours. “What does this tell me about the horns of the altar?”

1. The horns were a place of refuge.
2. The horns were easily accessible from every direction as they were placed at every corner.

That thought then took me to another reference to “a horn” that I remembered from the New Testament. (Y’all know how I love to connect OT and NT passages.)

“Blessed be the Lord God of Israel for he has visited and redeemed his people and has raised up a horn of salvation for us in the house of David.” Like 1:68-69

God raised up a horn for us in the house of David – Jesus. Jesus is our horn.

1. Jesus is our place of refuge.
2. Jesus is accessible to all who come to him.

I’ll give you another study tip – when you ask those questions – the answer is always “Jesus.” 😉
