I’m not sure how it happened, but I ended up with a rare treat this morning. Just me and my four year old had uninterrupted time on the couch while the others were downstairs playing. As it turns out, four year old girls have a lot to say. After talking about everything from Smurfs to what we want for Christmas this year to how much we love Chaney’s chocolate milk {seriously, y’all, it is something special), there was finally a lull in the conversation.

Sarah: What should we talk about now, mommy?

Me: Hmm, what do you want to talk about?

Sarah: It doesn’t matter as long as I’m talking to you.

And that, your honor, is how my four year old ended up with a big bowl of mint chocolate chip ice cream at 8:00 in the morning.

One thing I’m learning is that we should never pass up opportunities to talk to our children. It’s easy to get all caught up in correcting and teaching and those things are extremely important. But, it is also important that we know how to just be with and talk to them, as well.

I spent thirty minutes the other day playing with my 6 year old on her DS. We were playing Pinkalicious and were making chocolate cookies and such. Really, all I did was sit in the floor next to her and pick colors and pretend to eat her yummy creations. I’ll be honest, on the inside, I was very much aware that the kitchen was a wreck and all of my husband’s jeans were in the washing machine {and, you know, he prefers them to be dry when he wears them to work.} She was so excited to be sitting there with me and could not stop grinning. It was totally worth it.

Sometimes, the best thing you can do for your kids is just sit down and chat.
