2 Corinthians 2:1-11 Three Reasons to Forgive

2 Corinthians 2:1-11

Paul’s instructions concerning a brother who had caused pain within the church body:

• appropriate discipline (v 6)
• forgiveness (v 7)
• comfort (v 7)
• reaffirming of love (v 8 )

{Always keep context in mind. This is a letter to a church of believers. We are not talking about abusive, unhealthy, toxic relationships. Forgiveness sometimes means release but not restoration.}

👉 Why do we forgive someone who has wounded us?

  1. Out of obedience to the Lord (v 9)

Because God said so. Period.

  1. For the good of the church body (v 10)

Unforgiveness can cause divisions within the church body as people begin to take sides.

  1. So that we are not outwitted by the enemy (v 11)

When we harbor unforgiveness in our hearts – the enemy can use it against us.
