We previously read about Paul’s fear that the church would be led astray by false teachings. Here Paul gave more detail regarding these false teachings.
The people were being taught a “Jesus plus” way of living.
• Jesus plus some food restrictions (v 16)
• Jesus plus some festivals to attend (v 16)
• Jesus plus some regulations about what they could eat or touch (v 21)
• Jesus plus self made religious activities (v 23)
If we aren’t careful, this way of thinking creeps into our lives today. We think we need Jesus – plus we have to do enough good deeds to outweigh our previous failings. Jesus – plus enough church attendance and tithing to prove ourselves worthy. Jesus – plus never slip up and do that thing again. Jesus – plus anything that can make us feel like we somehow played a part in our own salvation.
Jesus plus. That’s what the people were being taught.
Paul said, “It’s Jesus. Only Jesus. Period.” (v 19)
It’s always and only Jesus. No other name. No other way.
