Peter opens his letter by identifying himself as an apostle. An apostle was one chosen and set apart by Jesus.
He addresses his letter to “elect exiles” – those chosen and set apart as followers of Christ.
Peter essentially begins his letter by pointing out the common ground. “I get you,” he says. “We are more alike than we are different.” The world separates us into groups, cliques, classes. It’s always been that way. But God says “all” have sinned. He says “anyone” who follows him must do so daily. Jesus invites “all” who are weary to find their rest in him.
We are far more alike than we are different, friends. Let’s seek the common ground.
