Small Talkin’ at the Walmart

I was standing in the kids’ section of Walmart, desperately searching for some winter gloves for my kids. My husband and I are determined that, this year, our children will be prepared when the first snow falls. No more pictures of our kids playing in the snow with socks on their hands – not that that ever happened. I mean, socks as mittens? Who would do such a thing? {Insert guilty emoticon here.}

In my defense, mittens and such are bought ev.er.y. year. But they end up on babies and filled with toys and hidden somewhere with all of the missing socks.

So, there I was minding my own business people watching at Walmart and I saw them. An older couple looking through the kids’ pajamas. “What size does the little one wear now?” the lady asked the man. “Don’t forget that so-and-so doesn’t like purple,” the man said. It was precious.

As I walked past them, I said, “Y’all are so cute.” The man looked up from the Dora the Explorer pajamas that he was xmas treeholding and stared at me as if I had three heads. I felt foolish and tried to explain that I had five daughters and my parents go through the same thing when shopping. Who likes what color and what child wears what size – it gets so complicated. The woman smiled and said, “We have six granddaughters. Tell your parents we feel their pain.” I walked away with the man still staring at me as if I were a lunatic. Apparently, if you make small talk with folks at Walmart, you come across as slightly weird. Ooops.

Now, I know.

Merry Christmas, y’all!

  1. One time a young woman stopped me to talk in Wal-Mart. I could tell something was not “right.” She went on to say I had a kind face and she just had to share. Then she told me she was pregnant with her first child, she had just found out, and she had not been able to reach her husband yet. She was so excited and I was thrilled she had picked me to share her news with. I felt honored by this reason I had never met!
