There is more to mommying than laundry.

Sophia - Dedication PhotoIt would be nice {I think} if there was a way to know, in advance, that the day was going to be a “no nap” kind of day. Because I plan things, you see. Today, for instance, I have not been feeling well and had decided that nap time would be when we would do our school work. But, apparently, the little one did not think that was a very good plan. The child that normally naps 2-3 hours slept for about twenty minutes.

It would have been nice to know ahead of time. That’s all I’m saying.

So, here we are. It’s the middle of the afternoon and the napless child has been, shall we say, a handful. Such is life. At least she is really cute.

This mothering thing is so important. I think we all know that. It is not, however, the be all and end all of life. It is not as important as our relationship with Christ. When I get caught up in the mommying of it all {yes, I totally made that word up}, other things begin to suffer. The laundry may be all done, but I’m feeling weary. That recipe I found on Pinterest made for a great supper, but I’m losing sleep because of worry and anxiety. My kids sure looked cute in those photos I posted, but I just can’t shake the grouchiness.

So, in my attempts to be super mom, what I become is weary-worried-anxious-grouchy mom. That is what happens when we {And by “we”, I totally mean “I”} do not put first things first. The thing is, putting God first, really is the best thing we can do for our children.

…that they may fear me forever, for their own good and the good of their children after them. – Jeremiah 32:39

When we fear {to stand in awe of; to honor; to revere and respect} God, it is good for us and for our children. Because the hard truth is, our children will probably not remember that recipe that got rave reviews on Pinterest. They are not going to grow up impressed with us because a bunch of people “liked” a photo that we posted on Facebook once upon a time. Truth be told, they are not all that interested in whether or not every item of clothing is clean all at the same time. They will remember us and whether we were happy or grouchy? They will remember the feel of the home and whether it was a stressful place or a peaceful one.

Do I want my children to have memories of me scrubbing my kitchen floor or spending time in God’s Word? Do I pray with them as often as I play with them?

Who will they say was my everything: them or the Lord? The answer is the most important part of mommying.
