Scoffers are gonna scoff.

It’s Friday and, for many people, that knowledge brings giddiness and joy. Friday means freedom. Friday means family time. Yes, Friday is a friend.

As I sit here, however, I’m thinking about those for whom Friday is not so grand. Friday just means that another week has slipped by without that prayer being answered. Another week of job hunting. Another week of loneliness. Another week of medical treatments. Another week of financial stress. Monday actually felt a little hopeful, like a new beginning. But, alas, it’s Friday again and nothing has changed. rainy day

For some, Friday means failure. Friday means feeling forgotten. If Friday is a friend, it is certainly a fair weather one.

It is you, friend, who was on my heart this morning as I read 2 Peter 3:1-9.

Peter is writing this beautiful letter of encouragement to believers in Christ. In fact, in verse 1, he says it is the second letter he has written to them reminding them of the “predictions of the holy prophets.” You see, these believers had been given a promise – a mighty big promise. It just happens to be the same promise you and I have been given. We have the promise of Christ’s return.

Why did these believers need some encouragement? Because there were some scoffers (verse 3) who were, well, scoffing. This is someone who is prone to mock or ridicule. These particular scoffers were ridiculing the believers for continuing to wait for and believe in Christ’s return.

They will say, “For where is the promise of his coming? For ever since the fathers fell asleep, all things are continuing as they were from the beginning of creation. – 2 Peter 3:4

The scoffers are pointing out that the prophets who had made these promises had passed away and, yet, there were no signs of their promise being fulfilled. The believers were believing, but the scoffers were scoffing because nothing. had. changed.

For some, that is what another Friday means. It’s just another week where you kept believing, but nothing has changed.

That relationship is still difficult.

That bill collector keeps calling.

That job didn’t work out.

You’re still believing, but scoffers are doing some scoffing. And, it is Friday, once again.

If that’s you, here is what Peter has to say to you.

Do not overlook this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness… – 2 Peter 3:8-9

God has not forgotten you. He is not dragging his feet. He isn’t busy answering someone else’s prayers. He has everything under control. Our God still has the whole world in his hands.

He is a great promise keeper.

It’s Friday, but that’s okay. You just keep believing. Leave the scoffing to the scoffers. The day will come when they will not be scoffing anymore and you will be able to say, “Lord, I believed you all along.”

  1. Just what I needed today. I wept as I looked at pictures of a large portion of my family enjoying Disney World this morning on face book. I feel joy for them, but I hurt for my own children and wonder if we will ever have the money to make such a trip ourselves. My Father is working on me and I DO believe that He has something better, than the financial struggles of today, in store for me.

    • I know exactly what you’re feeling, Amber. Sometimes, I just have to walk away from Facebook and play with my kids to remember that I am blessed beyond measure.
