When You’re Beginning to Sink

Life can be quite overwhelming, can’t it?

There are bills to pay and chores to do. There are children to teach and meals to make. There are relationship issues and family drama. There are illnesses and money problems. There are work assignments and report deadlines. There are worries about the future and regrets over the past. The craziest part of it all is that we act as if we can handle it all on our own. rainy day

It’s true, some days are good. You feel like you have everything under control. You are super mom or super wife or super woman. You know that feeling when you just owned that conference call or you rocked that peach cobbler? Yeah, you go on wit’ your bad self. But, then…

Oh, mercy, but then… a child wakes up with a fever. You realize you forgot to pay the electric bill. That email you sent making fun of your boss went to the wrong person. You know that you have more month left than money. Suddenly, you’re not riding quite so high. Even then, however, you think you know the solution.

If I just had a little more money…

If I had just a few minutes to myself…

If I could just get away for a little while…

If I was more appreciated at work..

You feel yourself beginning to sink and you start grasping for anything that might keep you afloat. Anything, that is, except the One who can.

But when he saw the strength of the wind,he was afraid. And beginning to sink he cried out, “Lord, save me!” Immediately Jesus reached out His hand, caught hold of him, and said to him, “You of little faith, why did you doubt?” – Matthew 14:30-31

There are two words you need to focus on in this passage.

  1. Beginning… Do not wait until you are over your head and drowning in despair. Do not attempt to doggy paddle your way through your trial. As soon as you feel yourself beginning to sink, cry out like Peter did to the Lord. Long before you lose your mind and make a scene at work, cry out to the Lord. Before you lose your cool at home and lose your patience with your kiddos, cry out to the Lord. Because…
  2. Immediately…He will hear your cry and lift you up. He will not let you sink. Cry out to Him and reach for His hand. You are never alone, my friend.

You do not have to go under. When you’re beginning to sink cry out, “Lord, Save me.” He will.
