Slip Away

You have to just steal away every now and then.  Remove yourself from the noise and all of the things that distract.

Sometimes, you have to pause and stare at something far greater than yourself.

Our problem is not that we fail to acknowledge the greatness of God.  Our error lies in the fact that we are far too ignorant of our smallness.

This life is crazy hectic and we run around as if we have everything under control.  There is no time to even pause.

Ann Voskamp says it this way.

The hurry makes us hurt. Life is not an emergency.

Slow never killed time, only the rushing and racing, the catching up that tries to catch up to time, this is what kills time.

Slow is the way to go.  Take the time to breathe it all in and stop the heart from racing for a moment.

Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, He got up, went out and made His way to a deserted place. And He was praying there. – Mark 1:35 HCSB

Christ was never in a hurry.  He never rushed by someone in order to tend to something more important. Though a girl lay dying, He stops and heals a woman.  When told that His dear friend, Lazarus, was ill, He stayed two more days in the place where He was.

Charles Hummell, in 1967, wrote an essay called The Tyranny of the Urgent.  In that work, Hummell says your greatest danger is letting the urgent things crowd out the important.

Urgent and important are not the same.  We need to learn the difference.  Learn to wait prayerfully for the Lord’s guidance before rushing off to put out the latest fire.

Often, the most important thing we can do is slip away and just be still for a moment.

  1. I loved this post. It speaks such truth, especially for me. It’s so very easy to get busy and forget to stop and take in the truly important things. I especially liked how you say urgent and important are not the same things.
