Don’t Misunderstand the Lyrics

Have you watched that show Don’t Forget the Lyrics?  The goal is for the contestant to be able to sing the lyrics to a popular song without any help.  Slightly lame, if you ask me.  However, it does make me laugh because my husband and I have had many conversations about song lyrics.  For instance, he always thought CCR was singing about the bathroom on the right.  I, on the other hand, always had a hard time understanding why Johnny Rivers was singing about a secret Asian man.  Then, of course, you have Elton John singing, Hold me closer, Tony Danza.  Maybe that one isn’t so confusing after all.

It has me thinking, however, about how easy it is for wrong information to get stuck in our heads.  It is especially easy if what we think we are hearing sounds similar to what is actually being said.  And, how difficult is it to retrain your mind to sing the correct lyrics once you know them?  Ugh.  Very difficult, indeed.

This is why it is so vital to be in God’s Word.  If we are more in the world than we are in the Word, it is very easy to misunderstand the lyrics.  We hear what sounds good to us.  We hear what lines up with our desires. But, we don’t always hear the truth.

  1. First off, the Tony Danza reference is hysterical. 🙂 Secondly, you’re right about staying in the Word so we remember it accurately.

More than once I’ve thought of getting those CD’s that put scripture to music (for kids). What a brilliant idea!
