We live in a world that almost encourages isolation. We get so caught up in our own lives and activities that friendships often fall by the wayside. Women are very susceptible to this and we often find ourselves feeling alone…not only in our pain, but in our joy as well. Women need other women. We need friendship, accountability and prayer support. I love Paul’s words to his fellow believers in Rome…
“For I want very much to see you, that I may impart to you some spiritual gift to strengthen you, that is, to be mutually encouraged by each other’s faith, both yours and mine.” – Romans 1:11-12 HCSB
Don’t worry…I am not about to break out in a Barbara Streisand rendition of People Who Need People…but, let’s face it…people do need other people. As Paul tells us, we are called to use our spiritual gifts to strengthen others in their faith. Our gifts are not intended for us to sit at home and hoard our giftedness.
Also, the purpose of relationship is for us to receive something as well. Paul said that he very much wanted to see his fellow believers in Rome. Why? Not only did he want to impart some spiritual gifts to them, but he also needed to be encouraged by them. He wanted to see them so that they could be mutually encouraged.
So, I am stepping out a little more these days…being a little more intentional about building quality relationships. While I love FaceBook…I do not want to sit back and convince myself that I have 136 friends. I want to truly know other women…be able to pray for them and rejoice with them. I want to know that, when I have my crisis of the moment, there will be fellow women of faith rising up to support me in my time of need.
People need people. It’s the way our Creator designed us. So, let’s all step outside of our immediate circle and develop friendships with those around us.
It is so so true. Eye contact and a smile at Wal-mart could be enough to change someone’s whole day!
May we love the people God brings into our lives.
